Rail Traffic Control

We develop robust and flexible rail traffic control (RTC) software systems and are the largest and most technologically advanced third-party dispatcher in North America.

Service operations

  • We started our first RTC service operation in 1999. Today, RailTerm provides safe and efficient dispatching services to more than 50 railways in the U.S. and Canada with nearly 6,000 miles of track. We issue more than 200,000 track authorities per year in the process.
  • Our varied client portfolio includes freight, intercity, commuter and transit operators. We have designed systems to accommodate both centralized traffic control (CTC) and dark territory control as well as multiple rules sets including GCOR and CROR. Our processes enable streamlined integration of new client operations, no matter where they are located.
  • Our communications and IT infrastructure is robust and secure. All train control activities are protected through double and triple redundancies to ensure uninterrupted service for our customers. Every dispatching desk features a Windows-based platform that accesses train control, bulletin and communication systems. Voice communications comprise redundant VoIP, satellite and PSTN copper phone line systems. Power supplies are protected by multiple redundancies. Our in-house IT and software departments provide 24/7/365 support.
  • All communications, both incoming and outgoing, are logged, recorded and can be remotely monitored. All authorities are archived and easily retrievable to give customers timely access to important data. RTC and supervisory staff have access to live data, using RailTerm’s reporting and analysis systems and MSAT satellite voice communication, which enable constant monitoring of operations in real time.
  • We have developed a suite of web-based tools to provide clients with real-time information and analysis for operations management, environmental monitoring, network management and incident reporting and management.
  • In emergency situations, operations at both of our North American dispatch centres can be transferred and quickly resumed at our disaster recovery centres, which mirror our main centres in terms of equipment and redundancies.
  • RailTerm has a highly experienced and motivated management team that is ready to provide operational solutions to customers and partners.

Software systems

TrainMaster is RailTerm’s robust and flexible rail traffic control software. This custom Windows™ based software integrates all rail operations and accommodates each client’s operating rules.

We have a comprehensive, versatile library of GCOR and CROR dispatch functions and interface options easily configured for light rail, commuter rail, subways, yards and freight systems.

  • Easy-to-configure control topology uses client/server design and TCP/IP application messaging, and provides scalable solutions as operational requirements evolve.
  • Seamless CTC, dark territory and yard control integration within a multi-user interface, real-time graphic displays and automated trainsheets.
  • Built-in simultaneous display of multiple track topologies, subdivisions, railroads, rule sets and user profiles.
  • Multiple railway operating rule sets (CROR, GCOR, NS) and customized form/rule tailoring services.
  • Real-time online graphic displays, event-log reports and playback provide railroad information for non-dispatch users.
  • Multiple language support: English and French available for all interfaces and forms.
  • Website support for incident reporting and interactive trainsheet management functions.
  • Integrated environment and track topology editor tailors customer-specific information such as track layouts, permissions, computer roles and rule sets.
